CS373 Spring 2022: Cole Weinman — Week 13

What did you do this week?

This week I mostly worked to catch up in my other classes since the previous week was spent mostly on finishing phase three of the IDB project. More specifically I worked on preparing to embroider my classical mythology project. I also visited the Blanton art museum on Wednesday to view some artwork related to my mythology class. However, I did start to refactor some of our front-end code that needed some work.

What’s in your way?

Currently, stress and anxiety are in my way as the semester finishes up. I have been very overwhelmed with work recently and it was been affecting my physical and mental health. I’m very much looking forward to the end of the semester.

What will you do next week?

Next week I will continue to work on refactoring as well as the visualizations for the final phase of the IDB project. I will also attend the UTCS Diversity Banquet on Tuesday which I’m excited about.

What did you think of Paper #13. What Happens to Us Does Not Happen to Most of You?

I found the paper to be quite shocking with some of the stories told. It is very unfortunate how many women are treated in male-dominated fields like computer science. I hope that with such an increased focus on the problem, the environment for women in these fields will improve.

What was your experience of subqueries and refactoring?

I found subqueries to be particularly useful when needing to make complex SQL queries. Also, I have really liked learning about the refactoring techniques because I believe it is one of the more important topics we have learned related to software engineering.

What made you happy this week?

I went home for the weekend which has been the highlight of the whole week. Seeing family and my dog has brightened my mood quite a bit considering it has been such a miserable few weeks. I also registered this week and was able to get all the classes I wanted which felt good considering my struggles last semester.

What is your pick-of-the-week?

My pick of the week is The Wayback Machine which is an archival service for websites. You can use it to view what websites looked like at certain points in time. I use it often to look at pages that were taken down or have undergone significant change. Most recently, I used it to look at an old class website where the same page now is offline.
